Paige Ambord
Assistant Professor of Sociology
UNC Asheville

Paige Ambord is an assistant professor of Sociology at UNC-Asheville who self-describes as AI-curious. In recent semesters, she has integrated AI lessons into her classes, so you might, for example, find her criminology students chatting with Bernie Madoff or planning a virtual heist. More broadly, Ambord seeks to better understand students' perceptions of AI and to support campus-wide efforts to build AI literacy through student surveys and lunch-and-learn workshops. Outside of her work on AI, Ambord researches and teaches about social science research, urban sociology, and culture.

Abstract
Three UNC Asheville faculty members will describe their efforts to research, design, and implement AI in their classrooms. This session reframes AI as teaching opportunities rather than problems to eliminate, while shifting the focus from simply using AI to also questioning it. Topics will include AI-based classroom activities, the development of instructor-facing tools, and reflections on how students respond to AI in learning environments. Panelists will share practical assignment designs that require students to analyze, challenge, and revise AI-generated outputs, thereby building critical judgment and accountability. Panelists will examine the limitations of AI tools (e.g. bias, over-reliance, and the unreliability of detection systems) and reflect on student responses to these initiatives, what works, and what requires further refinement. This session is designed to be interactive, with time reserved for audience questions and discussion. Attendees will leave with practical, adaptable strategies for integrating AI into their own teaching across disciplines.
